In an upcoming solo show at Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, Francis Livingston will showcase his latest body of work capturing the people and places of the American Southwest. Livingston’s new paintings exude peace and quiet—with horseback riders making their way through a winter forest, or Native Americans standing in front of adobe-style homes—aptly fitting the title of the show, Quiet Splendor.Several pieces are snow scenes, further entrenching that sense of quietude.

Snow Creek, oil, 30 x 30 in.
“Snow paintings in particular are works I very much enjoy. The stillness and isolation of a snowscape is quite appealing,” says Livingston. “The snow changes a typical landscape into an unusual world of contrasts that is temporary. It could disappear in several days or be there for months. Snow’s short term existence adds to the appeal to capture it in paint.”
On top of his snowscapes, Livingston will also include scenes of aspen and cottonwood trees, rivers and mountains.

Winter People, oil, 12 x 12 in.
“The Southwest has been a part of me forever,” says the artist, who was born in the Four Corners area of Colorado and spent a lot of time there as well as New Mexico and Arizona. “I know from discussions with many other artists that you either have a strong reaction to the Southwest or not. As a painter who came from an illustration background, I’ve had experience in depicting many areas of the country and the world. The Southwest is always easy to return to for me.”

Ruby Canopy, oil, 24 x 24 in.
Quiet Splendor will hang March 7 to 22 with an opening reception on the first day from 5 to 7 p.m. —
